The U.S. repels diplomats from Riyadh: Draws part of ambassador’s staff after increasing threats in Saudi Arabia

The United States of America has ordered the removal of part of diplomatic personnel and family members from Saudi Arabia, amid concerns of escalation of the security situation in the Middle East.

Concerns have increased following the US Embassy’s warning in Riyadh of possible attacks by the Huth rebels, who have earlier hit critical airports and infrastructure in the region. The US State Department warned that hostilities could escalate rapidly, not excluding other measures for protecting diplomatic personnel.

The escalation relates to the Yemen conflict, where government forces, backed by Saudi Arabia, have undertaken offensive against areas controlled by Huth, which are backed by Iran. In response, the group has launched rockets and threatened to target Saudi territory, including airports and power facilities, writes abcnews.al.

Meanwhile, tensions have also increased in the Persian Gulf. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard announced it had hit several ships involved, according to it, in illegal oil traffic and reported other mine incidents near the Strait of Hormuz. Tehran also warned of a broader response to American bases in the region in the event of further escalation.
