Pre – preparation food washing is viewed by many as a basic hygiene rule, but the American Food and Barnat Administration ( The FDA warns that washing raw meat, chicken, fish, and eggs can spread bacteria into the kitchen instead of removing them.
It does not make them safer for consumption. Instead, waterdrops can carry microorganisms to the sink, bar, vessels, and other foods that will not be subjected to cooking.

For this reason, The FDA recommends that raw meat, birds, fish, and eggs not be washed before cooking. This does not mean that such foods do not take care of the preparation, but that washing them with water can create more danger than profit.
Water can spread bacteria into the kitchen
Bringing the raw chicken doesn’t make it safe for consumption. Bacteria are eliminated through proper thermal treatment, cooking, roasting, or frying, respectively.
When the water falls on the living flesh, its drops can be distributed to the taps, sinks, counters, kitchen pots, and nearby food. This phenomenon is known as cross – contamination, and it applies to other species of meat and living fish.
Even eggs do not need to be washed before use
Eggs also should not be washed immediately before use, as this action can spread microorganisms into the hands, sink, and surrounding surfaces.
Rather, special importance is the complete washing of hands and the cleaning of vessels and surfaces that have been in contact with living eggs.
Fruits and vegetables should be washed with running water
Unlike raw meat and birds, fresh fruits and vegetables should be washed under running water before preparation or consumption, according to FDA advice. To that end, no soap, detergents, or commercial products should be used for washing dishes.
Fruits and vegetables, whose skins are not consumed, must also be washed before cutting. Otherwise, the knife can carry dirt and microorganisms from the outer surface to the part eaten.
So the rule before cooking is not always the best way to ensure safety. Fruits and vegetables should be washed with running water, while for raw meat and birds, safety is achieved through proper hygiene in preparation and cooking.
