Albanian Turnout Important for Number of Terms

Serbia is holding parliamentary elections in a tense political and waiting atmosphere for changes to the country’s political scene. Analysts estimate that high voter turnout could affect Serbia’s final outcome and political future. In this election, Albanians from the Presevo Valley compete with a joint list, while their participation is considered important for the number of mandates they can secure in Parliament.

In Serbia today, early parliamentary elections were held, which were reportedly accompanied by high citizens’ participation and waiting for changes to the political scene.

Over 6 million and 450 thousand citizens are eligible to vote, while 18 election lists compete for 250 seats in Serbia’s Parliament.

These elections are held after a period of discontent and protests led by students to Aleksandar Vuciqi’s multi-year power.

Political analyst Dorajet Imer estimates that the large mobilization of citizens can make this election process an important moment for Serbia’s political future.

These elections may be considered of historic importance to Serbia, because the real possibility of Serbia having political change or in its course may be very great. There are two reasons for this, mass election exit and the complete mobilization of society in Serbia to change the political regime there, Imer has said.

But besides the race between power and opposition, attention has also focused on minority communities’ votes, including Albanians in the Presevo Valley.

For analyst Dorajet Imeri, the participation of Albanians is important not only for the number of mandates they can win, but also for the role their representatives may have in the next parliamentary composition.

Even for Albanians in Serbia, it is very important that there be as many massive exits in the elections and their appearance will naturally be reflected in political mandates to be won in Serbia’s Parliament. And if the result is eventually narrow between political arms there, the importance of minorities then becomes determining for government formation, Imer added.

Joining Albanian subjects in a joint list comes after the agreement reached with the mediation of Prime Minister Kurti, at the end of September in Pristina.

In the 2020 elections, when Albanian parties competed together, they managed to secure three seats in Serbia’s Parliament. This time around, the goal is to increase representation and address the issues facing the Albanians of the Valley, including the progression of addresses, education and the use of Albanian language.
