France, violence damage during protests could amount to hundreds of millions of euros

The damage caused by violence and riots during the weekend protests in France could amount to tens, even hundreds of millions of euros, French Economy Minister Roland Lescure has declared.

In an interview for RTL radio, Lescure described the incidents as extremely serious, saying the country has faced acts of violence by anarchists and hooligans.

He made it known that the government is co-operating with insurance companies to support harmful businesses and businessmen, while pledging that measures will be taken to prevent the repeat incidents.

Meanwhile, new protests have been warned of Saturday in Paris. The Yelekverd movement has announced the organisation of a demonstration, while even labour unions and students plan to gather at Bastille Square.

The recent riots followed a protest against the increase in cost of living, held on October 17, when some 550 thousand people took to the streets throughout France.

During the protests there were clashes between demonstrators and police, vehicles were burned, shops were looted, and more than 2,000 people were arrested.
