Ukraine’s president, Voldymyr Zelensky, has declared there is nothing personal between him and US President Donald Trump, despite recent tensions between the two countries.
In an interview for CNN from Kiev, Zelensky warned that approaching Russian President Vladimir Putin and lifting sanctions on Moscow would only strengthen Russia.
Relations between Washington and Kiev have deteriorated over the past few weeks, following developments that have sparked concerns in Ukraine about the American administration’s stance on Russia.
Zelensky had earlier criticised Trump, calling him the wrong side of history after announcing an agreement on Russian oil purchase. The decision to ease some sanctions on Russia and restrictions on the approach of Ukrainian forces to the Starlink satellite service has also added concerns to Kiev.
In the latest interview, however, the Ukrainian president tried to lower the tone, stressing that his objections relate to policies against Russia rather than to personal relations with the American counterpart.
My position on Putin is very clear. I think if we remove the sanctions, we’ll make it stronger. It’s not a personal thing between me and President Trumpão, Zelensky said.
He also voiced scepticism about Putin’s willingness to end the war, accusing the Russian president of playing with people’s lives.
According to Zelensky, Ukraine expects its partners not to provide Russia with opportunities to strengthen and continue aggression.
Trump, meanwhile, has declared his administration is closer than ever to resolving the war in Ukraine. However, Russian attacks with fears and rockets on Ukrainian territory continue to question the prospect of a peace agreement.
