Filipovic: Serbia’s change of leader does not mean defeating nationalism

Political analyst from Montenegro, Ljubomir Filipovic, has warned that changing the leader in Serbia does not necessarily imply the defeat of nationalist ideology that has supported the power so far.

In a reaction on the X platform, Filipovic has criticised the expectations of some Serbian intellectuals that journalists and analysts subject their criticism to political interests of democratic transition in Serbia.

He has stressed that, prior to the elections, there were arguments that the discussion of nationalism within the student movement could undermine the chances of defeating Aleksandar Vucinqi, while now allegedly such criticism could jeopardise the consolidation of a democratic government.

Until when should we delay the criticism? According to him, if Serbian nationalism survives after political change, it could gain new democratic legitimacy and continue to affect Serbia’s relations with neighbours, causing instability in the region.
