Neither Gervala nor Svecla resign after Arlinda Zekiaj’s murder

Justice Minister Donika Gervalla, and Interior Minister Jjelal Svecla do not consider the resignation as a step that would contribute to addressing institutional responsibilities following the assassination of Arlinda Zekaj on October 25th.

Gervala, questioned about demands for her resignation, has stated that she would have taken such a step if she believed leaving the post would help to identify the most rapid and profound responsibilities for institutional actions and inactions.

She has asked that it be allowed to continue working on addressing responsibilities and supporting victims of domestic violence.

If I considered the resignation to be the mechanism for which we would contribute to a more accurate and deeper identification of responsibilities for action and inaction, I would have resigned. I think exactly the opposite is. Citizens of the Republic of Kosovo know that I am on the side of the victims at a high public cost. I assure you that victims of domestic violence have the most powerful ally today in the national co-ordinator, let us do our job, allow us to make sure that they’re exposed and addressed to responsibilities and then we discuss the issue of resignations again, Gervala said.

Even Minister of Internal Affairs Xhelal Svecla has stated he does not think to resign after Zekilay’s murder.

He mentioned that ten years earlier he had resigned from a position, although he felt he had no responsibility for the case then, reasoning that his departure could contribute to improving practices in that field.

However, Svechla has said that this time she does not believe her resignation would help empower women and advance their rights.

I’ve resigned 10 years ago… without any responsibility for the case back then, thinking that my resignation would contribute to improving practices in that area, now I don’t think that our resignation would contribute to the empowering of women, in her rights that we are engaged hundreds at that point. I’m with the protesters, I understand the indignation and rage of the protesters, Svechla has declared.
